What happens if you disable auto-cancel subscriptions

Understanding Subscription Auto-Cancellation Settings

Updated today

When creating or editing a subscription plan in Recurpay, you have control over the "life cycle" of a subscription. One of the most important settings is deciding whether a subscription should end automatically after a set period or continue indefinitely.

What is Auto-Cancel?

The Auto-Cancel option is a setting found within the Subscription Plan creation or edit screen. This feature is designed for the 2 types of subscriptions for example, a 6-month gift/prepaid subscription or a 12-month membership.

  • How it works: When enabled, you specify a set number of renewal cycles (orders).

  • The Result: Once the customer reaches that specific number of renewals, the system automatically cancels the subscription for you. No manual intervention is needed.

What Happens if You Disable Auto-Cancel?

If you choose to disable the auto-cancel feature, you must enable the alternative option: "Do not cancel subscription automatically."

When this is enabled, the subscription enters an "ongoing" or "evergreen" state. Here is what happens:

1. Continuous Billing

The subscription will continue to renew and bill the customer at the set frequency (e.g., every month) indefinitely. It will not stop until a specific action is taken.

2. Customer-Led Cancellation

The primary way the subscription ends is through the customer. They must log in to their "Manage Subscription" account and manually click the cancel button.

3. Merchant-Led Cancellation

As the merchant, you retain full control. If a customer contacts you via email or phone to request a cancellation, you can manually cancel their subscription through your Recurpay dashboard at any time.
